Despite its cheap, commercial origins, the planchette becomes a tool of genuine occult power in Nadine Cross's hands, serving as a direct line of communication to Randall Flagg, the dark man who has haunted her dreams for years.

Origin and Nadine's Acquisition

Nadine finds the planchette in a downtown novelty shop in Boulder, Colorado, after the superflu epidemic has devastated the population. She experiences a powerful aversion/compulsion conflict: part of her wants to flee the shop without looking back, while another part—which she suspects is not entirely her own will—compels her to snatch the box and carry it home. She hides it in her closet for four days, unable to use it, but the compulsion grows stronger each night. The planchette represents a threshold: once she employs it, she will have consciously and deliberately opened herself to Flagg's influence, moving beyond the passive reception of dreams into active collaboration.

The College Séance and Its Warning

Nadine's history with the planchette dates back to her college years, when she participated in a dormitory séance with several other girls. During that session, the planchette initially produced silly, jocular messages typical of such games. Then it suddenly began to move with violent, independent force, dragging the girls' fingers along and writing in large, slanting capital letters. The message was a terrifying, possessive declaration: "NADINE, NADINE, NADINE... HOW I LOVE NADINE TO BE MY TO LOVE MY NADINE TO BE MY QUEEN... IF YOU ARE PURE FOR ME IF YOU ARE CLEAN FOR ME IF YOU ARE DEAD FOR ME." The planchette concluded by snapping in two, leaving the participants shaken. A horse-faced girl who had warned against the practice told Nadine that automatic writing could be dangerous, that people had gone mad from it. This early experience foreshadows the planchette's true nature as a conduit for a dark, possessive intelligence that has long marked Nadine as its own.

The Mountain Summit Communication

After Larry Underwood rejects her final desperate attempt to seduce him, Nadine realizes she has no choice left but to fully embrace her destiny with Flagg. She takes the planchette to Sunrise Amphitheater, high in the mountains west of Boulder, at night. The location is significant: it sits in a liminal zone between the Free Zone's sphere of influence and Flagg's western territory, where "the magic flew both ways, mixing, making its own concoction." She places the planchette on a clean sheet of paper from an artist's sketchpad and sits on a picnic bench, pressing her fingers to two of its three sides. The planchette begins to move immediately, thrumming under her touch like a car with its engine idling. She speaks the incantation "Tell me," and the planchette begins to write, establishing a direct, conscious link between Nadine and the dark man.

Consequences and Thematic Significance

The planchette session marks the point of no return for Nadine. Through it, she receives Flagg's instructions and confirmation of her role as his bride. The device literalizes the theme of supernatural communication that runs throughout the novel: where the Free Zone's dreams are collective, ambiguous, and ultimately protective, the planchette offers a private, direct, and destructive channel. It is a perversion of the Ouija board's innocent party-game reputation, revealing that such tools can open doors to genuine evil when used by someone already spiritually vulnerable.
